exhaust

Postby terzomark on Sat Nov 01, 2008 6:26 pm

hello all,

the standard exhaust on the old girl is the best part of f**ked, and i'm considering a Prodrive version rather than the twin pipe standard item. Any ideas as to cost, if this is still available as new (or where i could find a good second hand one) and any other bits of advice? would any extra work need doing, for instance? And insurance?

thanks!

Hi Mark,
You can still buy new prodrive back boxes as far as I know, however there are a lot of choices availabe you can pick up a decent 2nd hand one for a fraction of the price.

The best option would be to go stainless steel as for fitting they are dead simple to fit remove the 2 bolts where it joins the centre section and the 3 rubber mounts.

Some things to consider are how much do you want to spend? How loud do you want it?

As for insurance purposes yes you must declare it as a stainless after market backbox, most insurance companies do not increase the premium as long as its declared.

I hope this helps

thanks for the reply, i can only really stretch to £600, so i know that seriously limits 'brand new' options. as for loudness, well i really want to keep the car as standard as possible but the standard back box is just so miserable i don't fancy replacing it for another one...hence my Prodrive idea.
i emailed various subaru dealers asking for qoutes, and not one replied. xzz in the end i rang a dealer, who says Subaru no longer make them for 98 Imprezas. Even if this is correct, surely there must be some in stock somewhere- they're not the crown jewels for crying out loud!
maybe i'll try eBay, but i'm a bit wary as i'm no spanner monkey and not 100% sure about what i'm to look for. do they come with a code, for instance?

For that kind of many and plenty of change i would recommend Hayward & Scott http://www.haywardandscott.com/results.asp?category=13

Hayward & Scott are specialists in the fabrication of custom stainless steel exhausts for numerous road and race car applications.
The company has crafted systems for numerous vehicles including Ford GT40's, Aston Martins, Jaguar D-Types and various Ferrari and Porsche models. Our expertise has been built up over the last twenty years constructing systems for wide range of vehicles, from Austin Sevens to Formula 1 cars.

There's no code as such but I hope these help with your quest, if you want any more help just ask dk

thanks very much for this, i'll have a nosey at the link above now. i actually got an email response this afternoon, from a main dealer who said he could get hold of a WR Sport exhaust- i'm not sure what this is, so i'm going to give him a call tomorrow. I have a feeling its an oval shaped box- and if so , i'm not too keen. sorry to call on your knowledge once again, but are you familiar with this?

hmmmm, i think i'll be giving Hayward and Scott a call! I found the same image, and if that's it, then no thanks. that single pipe one you posted above looks great though, i'll look into that tomorrow.

hey, thanks again for your help- as i said earlier, i can tell a spanner from a screwdriver, but i rely on expert advice in these matters. much obliged. should anyone else out there have an opinion or experience, please speak up!

No worries, glad I could help  the top pipe is the one I have on mine gives it a nice burble, but quiet until you put your foot down zxz if you can change a wheel then you can do this, it's almost like plug n play. wq

it looks spot on- just what i had in mind. i really want to keep the ol' girl as standard / simple as possible so this would be a really subtle upgrade. also, for that price, i might have enough in the pot to get a new middle section too- i think that's on borrowed time.
Anyway, i'll call this guy tomorrow and see what this WR Sport thing is all about- it's a main 'baru dealer over in Cirencester, so once i know, i'll let you know.

have a great weekend!

Update on the WR Sport exhaust...I spoke to the guy over at Cirencester Subaru, and IT IS the oval pipe shown above. I'm really not too keen, so i'm going the way of H & S some time in the new year. The prices were much the same, although the WR Sport exhaust came in slightly more expensive at £276 (inc VAT). I've also decided that a new centre pipe is needed- if I get a 'standard' one, is it easy enough to fit? Are there any aftermarket ones to recommend? Also, and I'm being really cheeky now, you don't have any pics of the H & S backbox as fitted to your car do you?

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Mark,
thats a lot of info fj anyways i'll try and answer your questions as best as I can iu

The centre pipe depends whether you want to de-cat 1 stage? I have a janspeed on mine

They are relativley easy to fit however you will probably need new spring bolts for the downpipe to centre pipe, also if you are going down that road I would advise fitting them together in piece rather than struggling under the car jj

Thanks for that, to be honest my only real concern is insurance- i'm more inclined to avoid too much messing about and prefer to keep it simple,so i'll probably go down the standard centre / H&S back box set up. The picture above confirms it for me, that looks smart! Thanks again for your input, I feel this is a more informed decision now!

All the best,

Mark

Glad I could help wq and thank you dk I'm afraid I can't help much with the std centre pipe apart from it might be worth a look on ebay for a good 2nd hand one and good luck.
